Tim Oliver, son of concert pianist Wilma Hill, grew up surrounded by music. As a child he developed a fascination with the electronic and technical side of music-making — beginning with home keyboards, and eventually building setups with drum machines, synths, rudimentary computers and cassette recorders.

Throughout his childhood and early adult years he played in church every Sunday, while continuing to work on his own material at home. Obsessions formed with the likes of Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Vangelis and cinematic music in general — that combination of soundscapes and passionate vocal expression where he could disappear. After moving to London, and through a series of both orchestrated and chance encounters, he gradually built a career as a session musician, all the while writing and recording in his bedroom.

He lived a culturally schizophrenic life, often moving day to day between the late-90s outdoor rave scene on the south coast, the pentecostal church worship scene, the covers-band circuit, classical arranging and recording sessions at places like Abbey Road, scoring landmark BBC documentaries, working in the basement for production music company Altitude on Brick Lane, and touring and performing on television with artists including Neneh Cherry, The Ting Tings, Boy George, Thunder, Tony Hadley, Pixie Lott and Lady Gaga. It all went into the pot. Through all this he made a name for himself as something of a sonic craftsman, caring deeply about the sounds he produced on his keyboards and noticing the effect they had on himself, his bandmates and the audience.

It’s possible that through all of this he was searching for the common thread that tied it all together — connecting himself to the people and the world around him through music. He has always sought to find that expression in its rawest form, nowhere more so than with The Silent Room: an in-between space where he and the listener can meet.
